The permanent and global struggle for hegemony in Europe, which coincided with the second phase of the Italian Wars (1536-1558), involved the massive mobilization of human, financial and cognitive resources available to the competing dynasties, the Habsburgs and the Valois. The inability to manage an enduring war effort in a centralized way, given the State bureaucracies’ organizational limits, imposed the recourse to assets of noble families loyal to the monarchy, and especially to their networks of personal relationships, horizontal and vertical. This essay analyzes the military relevance of the relationship between ‘patron’ and ‘client’, the related dynamics of exchange of ‘favors’ and ‘services’ and their impact on the structure and recruitment of two types of army unit - committed to the defense of the Duchy of Milan in the early Habsburgs domination , heavy cavalry and the Italian infantry company.
