Gianpasquale Santomassimo reviews Paolo Favilli’s Marxismo e storia. Saggio sull’innovazione storiografica in Italia (1945-1970) (FrancoAngeli 2006). The book thematizes and analyzes the various phases of the problematic issue of the eclipse of marxism in Italian culture and historiography, following its prolonged role of primary importance. Favilli’s discussion moves at different levels; but, as the author stresses, it remains within the path of marxist tradition, which is heuristically still valid for an understanding of the past and present. The book is distant from the generalized tendency of writings, particularly widespread in the past fifteen years, to savage marxism.
