Il corpo emozionale - The body and its movements are crucial means for emotion expression. Others’ emotion comprehension through their bodies’ posture and motion is essential to good social interactions as well as adaptive behaviour. The brain has indeed developed partially different neural systems specifically dedicated to body form and body action processing. The field of cognitive neuroscience has recently developed experimental research on the neural underpinnings of emotional body perception. In particular different results show the involvement of motor and occipitotemporal cortical areas during fearful body postures perception. Activation of these structures, besides the classical subcortical emotion-related network, highlights the functional relation between emotion and action. Here we discuss these findings in the context of embodied cognition theory which claims that the mental representation of emotions is grounded on reactivating brain structures that were active during the personal experience of the same emotions.
