After the second World War, in the wake of the consensus on action that had basically characterized the Resistance and of the wartime experience that had just ended, there were many, above all of democratic-secular orientation, who embraced europeanist or federalist ideas. Among these was Mario Albertini who, beginning in the 1950s, would devote his entire life to the federalist ideal, from his militancy in the MFE section of Pavia to the presidency of the European Union of Federalists from 1975 to 1984, becoming a well-known leader of European federalism. This paper summarizes the main stages of his political and intellectual adventure, focussing in particular on his education, his proselytizing work, the ethics of responsibility, the choice to create a militant autonomous political force, and the view that all political action should be deeply-rooted in culture.
