Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising candidates as a substitute for fossil fuel, because it is clean, renewable and has a high energy yield. Furthermore the bio-hydrogen production process from waste biomasses can fulfill the goal of waste reduction avoiding the impact of their disposal on the environment. The aim of the present study is to investigate the feasibility of biohydrogen production by dark fermentation using cattle manure alone and in co-digestion with agricultural and food processing waste (deproteinized cheese whey and crude glycerol). Biological hydrogen production was studied in batch reactors at 37°C. The initial experiments on single substrate were carried out to test the effects of substrate sterilization on hydrogen production. Results showed that sterilization promoted hydrogen production up to 3 times. In a second set of experiments different mixing ratio of substrates were investigated to improve hydrogen production from cattle manure. Results showed that co-digestion enhance hydrogen production yield from 24% to 78%.
