Antinomies of bourgeois pastimes: alpinism in Italy between culture and society. Mountaineering is a typical phenomenon of European modernity; it is a recreational activity of leisure and a sport, but also a cultural practice that has developed over the last two centuries. Although it has interested philosophers, sociologists, psychologists and anthropologists, only in recent years have mountaineering and mountaineers become the object of historiographical surveys. This review presents the most recent Italian contributions, placing them in an international context, according to the long-term perspective that is typical of the literature about climbing.
