In this paper we present an assessment of the Italian territory at risk of desertification as an environmental phenomenon potentially linked to the sustainable development of the Mediterranean region. The issue is particularly relevant for the ecological and socioeconomic implications. The study illustrates an integrated monitoring system aimed at informing territorial policies. The environmental conditions recorded in Italy during the observation period (1960-2010) are linked to a progressive increase in land vulnerability most evident in the lowlands and in northern Italy. This monitoring system is capable to address the sustainable development strategies towards greater attention to environmental issues of climate change and land degradation.
