The condition of deprivation and poverty cannot be accounted for in terms of income alone. Its multidimensional nature needs be addressed with a more complex intellectual tool: here Amartya Sen’s capability approach is employed. The difference in ability to translate income into well-being depends on the influence of numerous variables reflecting the circumstances of the person, while many other variables independent of the single individual also matter, such as disadvantage in converting income into functionally positive results, or the inner disparities within a community. Since greater individual capability fosters production and earning potential, studying its dynamics can prove fundamental in devising public policies. EconLit Classification: I320, D310, E240
