In the last few years, in many countries the gambling industry has been affected by a shift from a regulation model that makes provision for the direct management of the betting sales by government agencies as monopolists, towards other regulation models more open to competition. Also in Italy a management model of public gambling has already been established which, although controlled by the State, is characterized by a greater involvement of private governance compared with the past. If one looks specifically at the gambling segment which - together with that of Lotto - has the longest tradition in Italy, namely that of sports betting, the affirmation of a regulation system more open to the private management is the consequence of a profound liberalization process stated in the 1990s and having become more intensified starting from the new millennium.The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of the liberalization process on the market dynamics in the sport betting industry in Italy. The empirical analysis carried out has shown that in this sector certain typical effects of the liberalization process have taken place, such as the increase in the quantities and variety of the consumption, the reduction of average market prices, the lowering of entrance barriers and the entry of new operators, and has granted the studying of the effects of these changes in competitive business logics.
