The "take-off" of the University of Catania begins in the mid-1880s. The process of growth and internationalization of the University and its laboratories is perfectly exemplified by the scientific and didactic activity of the astrophysicist Annibale Riccò. The progress and the quantitative and qualitative increase of the faculties (above all the scientific ones) was an effect of a political, economic and cultural "take-off" of the "Milan of the South" also due to the presence of a ruling class which alternated, sometimes without continuity solution, the political commitment (local and national) and the university one, creating a real process of osmosis between governmental and academic policies.
