The creation of a new currency for the Italian colonies in East Africa was driven by various reasons: a) establishing political power; b) re-ducing transaction costs; c) building the colonial economy. The Eritre-ans refused the new colonial coins and forced the colonial government to use Maria Theresa’s Thalers. The ancient Austrian currency was melted into precious objects, which were the families’ savings. These monetary practices were similar to those of the Ancien Régime in Eu-rope. The persistency of the circulation of Thalers suggests the con-tinuing relevance of independent economy and social spaces that con-tradicted the colonial intention to organize a stable controlled monetary system.
