The images and tales of rural bandits represent an indispensable piece of the romantic storytelling, which invents the type of the Italian brigand and transforms him into a poly- semic figure, continually poised between crime, politics and fiction. This special issue of- fers an analysis of three stories of 19th-century brigands that correspond to three possible narrative and communicative paths, one of which is specifically icon-textual.
