The final approval of the Nature Restoration Law (NRL, June 2024) by the European Council and the resulting need to define specific national plans open up new prospects for applied research, including in the field of geography. This paper addresses the topic from the perspective of historical geography. The paper highlights key aspects of the NRL and discusses them within the current geohistorical debate. Finally, the development of future research directions is encouraged, aiming to contribute to the implementation of the NRL. These include empirical studies at the local scale on the historical geography ofanimals, Historical GIS, and the historical ecology of individual landscapes.
