The main argument of this essay is that Berlusconi’s ten years in politics have coincided with a process of presidentialisation of the Italian political system. By this term, the author means a phenomenon that has two fundamental dimensions: a political and an electoral dimension. From a political perspective, the process of presidentialisation can be described as the institutional strengthening of the head of State and of the leader within his own political party. From an electoral perspective, this change modifies the very essence of electoral campaigning, transforming it from a party-centred process into campaigns that focus on the leaders and their personalities.
