Delio Cantimori asserts that contemporary history main subject of research must be the political life, and that contemporary history has to be seen as international history which it needs a good geographic, statistical, economic, linguistic and institutions’s knowledge. Cantimori is aware of the difficulties of consultation of the archives for recent periods – but above all – he stresses an important admonition: do not have any form of idolatry of the document, nor to play with it the game of retrospective revelation, nor to use it in legal dispute and political polemics. Just because in all these cases the sense of the historical perspective is lost.
