Individual mental health involves resiliency and capacity to adapt positively. These two abilities enable the person to cope with adverse events and to reach full potential. Curricular school programs that develop social skills enhance mental health and reduce depressive symptoms. The authors present an Italian program for mental health promotion in secondary education. This program comprises 20 sessions of 60 or 90 minutes. It is documented in a handbook for students that contains chapters on how to communicate in an effective and assertive way, how to deal with confl ict and anger, increase self-discipline, negotiate, cooperate and promote positive interpersonal relationships. 13 classes of 11 middle and high schools (i.e. 253 students from 13 to 18 years old) volunteered to participate in a feasibility study to assess the handbook. Each chapter was evaluated using two criteria: interest and usefulness. The handbook was generally considered helpful and practical. However, the students often underlined that the sessions were too short to reach the fi xed targets. A revised version of the handbook was subsequently edited and then sent to the publisher. This user-friendly handbook could become a useful tool for mental health promotion in secondary school education.
