The project "Participatory Evaluation of Day Centres for Mental Health in the Municipality of Rome", has been carried out by the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies - CNR. It was born in 2004 on behalf of the Department for Social and Health Policies of the Municipality of Rome. This action-research has met different needs: the necessity to have assessment tools by the Local Authority, and the perception of the Services of being isolated from the context. The project has been the result of the sharing among the various stakeholders. This activity has involved a great number of stakeholders from 26 Day Centres in Rome and has aimed to the implementation of process related to quality, organization, social representations, planning activities, training. This paper describes the phases of the project and shows some features, such as the involvement of staffs and managers in the research; the changes in the activities of the Day Centres; the redefinition of the role and of the mission of the Local Authority. It also suggests some methodological reflections.
