Contemporary societies are characterized by cultural and religious diversity. Due to their functions of socialization and education to citizenship, schools have a crucial role in managing and practicing this diversity. The present contribution analyses the Muslim schools in Italy: the first section presents the data on foreign students and religious diversity in Italian schools; the second section addresses the juridical status of Muslim schools in Italy; the third section frames the public discourse - and the public alarm - around these schools; the fourth section is devoted to the first mapping of Muslim schools in Italy; finally, the last section discusses the outcomes, in light of the current political and public debates on Muslim schools in Italy.
Keywords: School, education, Islam, religion, migration, media.
