Historians of the contemporary age have been reflecting on the state of the discipline for many years now, in Italy and abroad. Among the many issues under consideration are: the multiplication of new fields of research; an increasing specialization of studies; the cross-pollination with other social sciences; the emergence of a "global" historiographical debate, favored, in part, by digital technologies; the complex relation with the public debate; the difficult moment, in terms of both resources and role, experienced by human sciences. In recent years, a lively international debate on the perspectives of historical studies in the new millennium has developed, with the contribution of leading scholars and research institu-tions. Mondo contemporaneo aims at contributing to this debate, inviting eminent historians to discuss, through interviews, the state of historiography on the con-temporary age, the role of the historian today, and the challenges that the discipline faces at present. This issue of the journal presents an interview with Jean-François Sirinelli.
Keywords: Contemporary history, human sciences, interviews, role of the historian, public debate, historiography
