The article presents the recent evolution of policies to combat violence against women in Europe, moving from its definition as gender-based violence in the early 1990s. Following a brief description of the different types of gender-based vio-lence, the article highlights the role of both women’s movements and of interna-tional institutions in shaping the approach adopted and the recent evolution of policies to tackle gender-based violence in European countries, underlying their main strengths and weaknesses.
