On the borders of sociability: courtesans and salons in the Second Empire presents an analysis, based on archival sources, that goes beyond stereotypes. The courtesan, a high rank prostitute, was a central figure of the social, cultural and economic life of Paris in the second half of the 19th century. Following the reflections of Agulhon and Bourdieu, an interpretation of the courtesan’s salon is suggested as an alternative space of sociability and as the birthplace of a new, independent and structured literary field.

Keywords: Courtesan, prostitution, salon, Paris, literary field.
