Many Western museums have had to deal with the question of the return of human remains contained in their collections, but in Italy this problem is characterized by distinctive features because of the anti-Risorgimento revisionism. An opinion movement, based on a distorted representation of the Lombroso Museum, led by politicians and journalists eager to label the Museum as racist and to get rid of its collections, is gaining ground across the Web. This article reconstructs the court case and media coverage regarding the skull of Giuseppe Villella, displayed in the Lombroso Museum, as well as the positions of the main protagonists of the controversy and the risks that the historical revisionism on the Risorgimento interpreted as colonial conquest poses to Italian cultural heritage and the formation of public opinion.
