At the time of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic world started a discussion about Catholicism and politics, in particular about the possibility that not all Catholics continued to identify themselves with the Christian Democracy. The debate on Italian political Catholicism spread among Catholic intellectuals in the 1970s, in the wake of the referendum on divorce and involved either the Catholics who voted in favor of divorce or those who opposed it. They both began an intense exchange of views about the Christian Democracy’s chances to be refounded. In 1974-1975, then, the Catholic world was divided between those who still believed in the possibility of reforming the Dc, those who instead envisaged the foundation of a second Catholic party and, finally, those who suggested to vote for Left-wing parties. In November 1975 the Democratic League was born, founded by Scoppola, Bassetti, Prodi, Gorrieri, Ardigò and Gaiotti. The League soon became the center of this continuous debate over the future of Italian political Catholicism.
