This essay offers an original reconstruction of the British presence in the Mediterranean by tracing the rise and decline of British power and placing these processes in the overall context of the Napoleonic Wars. The analysis focuses on the ambitions of the governments in London and the relationships they established with the territories under their control, but especially on the genesis of an ambitious hegemonic project on the Mare Nostrum, envisioned by the Government of All the Talents as a strategic support and restraining force against Napoleon, but destined to fail after 1815.
