Over the last two decades, studies on urban development in Turkey have consis- tently highlighted the stern impact of neoliberal macroeconomic policies, characterized by the accumulation of domestic capital and its investment in the real estate sector. Equally important is the magnitude of administrative reforms that widened the prerog- atives of municipalities and local governments. The AKP national cabinet and the AKP-led municipal administration have often promoted rapid and intense urban regen- eration policies. New peripheral neighborhoods were built, while the gecekondu-style informal areas were the object of urban renewal policies. Reasons of security, health, seismic safety gave an aura of legitimacy to extended interventions, often implement- ed by a public agency called TOKİ, in addition to different forms of cooperation among private and public actors. The convergence of private and political interests is particularly evident in the religiously-oriented business milieu that is defined as "mar- ket-oriented post-Islamism".
