The article is centered on how the Pci and the Psi perceived the movement of 1977, an ensemble of different trends of social mobilization inspired by those of 1968. Yet the movement of 1977 was more violent and desperate than the other, and hardily opposed the Pci strategy called "historical compromise". In 1977 Pci and Psi fought each other to lead the Left: thanks to its electoral successes, the Pci sought to participate in government and strongly criticized social protest; electorally weak, the Psi aimed to delegitimize Pci’s governmental aspirations, to show comprehension for social unrest, and to depict itself as the sole real reformist party in Italy.
