The article aims to offer a new interpretation of the concept of ‘dignitas’ in Pico’s thought, with particular reference to his best-known work, the Oratio de hominis dignitate. Analysis is conducted both from a textual histo- ry and a philosophical perspective in order to show how previous interpretations are unconvincing, thus laying the foundations for a different exegetical proposal. The arti- cle concludes with a note dedicated to specific occurrences of the terms ‘indignatio’ and ‘nemesis’ in Pico’s work, the first with a clear rhetorical- moral connotation and the second used in an astrological context.

Keywords: Pico della Mirandola, Oratio de hominis dignitate, human dignity, indigna- tion, nemesis.
