This article analyzes the current debate taking place in the social sciences on "mafie" in Italy. In particular, it examines two recently published books: Luciano Brancaccio, I clan di camorra. Genesi e storia, Roma, Donzelli, 2017, and Vittorio Martone, Le mafie di mezzo. Mercati e reti criminali a Roma e nel Lazio, Roma, Donzelli, 2017. These studies are both focused on the origins and developments of mafia-type criminal organizations and present an overview of case-studies on the issue. Brancaccio analyzes the camorra clans rooted in the Naples area, and the role that historically markets, socio-political networks and family ties had in their expansion. Martone highlights the rise and spread of organized-crime groups based in non-traditional areas, such as Rome and the Lazio region.
