Thomas Linacre, a renowned scholar in Tudor England, contributed to the expansion of humanism across his homeland from its origins in Italy. Educated as a Greek scholar and translator of the classics, Linacre is perhaps best known for his role of court preceptor and physician to Henry VII and Henry VIII, and as the founder of the Royal College of Physicians in London.
Whilst first taught at Oxford, Linacre’s interest in humanism led him to a prolonged peregrinatio academica along the Italian peninsula, where he spent a significant amount of time at the University of Padua.
Over the rich backdrop of Linacre’s life and work, this book discusses the rôle played by the towns of Padua and Oxford in his intellectual maturation and towards his scholarly and civic deeds. The book draws wider connections about the influence of Italian humanism on the growth of similar intellectual and cultural trends in England.
